Off-Grid News - December 2015 Minister of Development visits solar installations in Eritrea
The German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development
Dr. Gerd Müller travelled to Eritrea in December to inform himself
about the situation on the spot and look for possibilities to combat
the reasons for escape. Among others, he visited the „Orotta
Hospital“ in der Eritrean capital of Asmara, a maternity hospital
supported by the German non-governmental organisation Archemed e.V.
that has been equipped with a Phaesun solar system to secure the
power supply of the most important medical equipment. After that
there was a round table with representatives from the industry and
politics and the Phaesun Team took the chance to discuss about the opportunities of solar systems
to strengthen the local economy. Phaesun Managing Director Tobias Zwirner reports: „The minister was very taken by the close cooperation of
the Eritrean and German partners and complimented the transfer of
German technology to improve the living conditions in Eritrea! He
was also very interested in the BOSS concept that uses solar systems
for local entrepreneurs to generate income for the rural population."
The minister’s visit serves as a basis for a decision as to whether
the cooperation between Germany and Eritrea can be extended also on
a political level associated with development aid by the state.

Bright light at Abidjan Harbour
85 solar LED streetlights have been installed at the entry of the
harbour in Abidjan/Ivory Coast by Phaesun in cooperation with the
local partner S-TEL. Abidjan harbour is one of the largest freight
harbours in Africa and thus very important for imports and exports
to and from Western Africa. The entrance of the harbour, the
so-called Vridi Channel was illuminated by grid connected street
lights before. Due to old technology and an unreliable electricity
grid the harbour lighting turned to be inefficient and unreliable.
Any interruption of the lighting stops all boat traffic, which has
tremendous consequences on operations such as delayed schedules,
traffic jams, and financial repercussions. The solar street lamps
now guarantee reliable illumination along the channel piers. Please
find pictures of the installation on our Facebook page here.
